Mayors Debate-Round #1

A recent Mayor’s debate was held at Town Hall with 5 representative’s from local media asking questions. I want to clarify or correct a few statements made by Mr. Avis. He told the viewing public that Council voted to close Central Avenue and the Town lost grant money to repair it. This is simply not true, grant money had not yet been applied for, and as the norm, never guaranteed. He avoided saying he opposed the esablishment of a truck route to get trucks of the water front and Scott Street, and talked of the “deplorable condition of our roads” remember this, he was the chair of the Public Works Department for 8 years, we didn’t hear from him then.

I believe in continuing the public consultations on Long Term planning, Mr. Avis agreed, now that he is running for Mayor. He voted to kill a development plan as he did with the Reinventing Committee development plan, offering no alternative plan or recomendations.
As I outlined during the debate, we need to work on additional Seniors Housing, a complete review of the Official Plan which is frustrating and stopping development, commence full public discussions on the Clinic issue, to ensure we create a “positive environment” to attract more Health Care Professionals.
I look forward to the next debate where members of the public are free to ask questions of all candidates.
